GENDER-BASED
VIOLENCE.

1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence.

Gender-based violence is one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. These are the facts — and why OBSERVE is taking a stand.

The Facts

1 in 3 women worldwide — about 840 million women and girls — have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence by a non-partner during their lifetime.

316 million women experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner in the 12 months covered by the latest global estimates — around 11% of women aged 15 and older.

Violence is often perpetrated by someone the victim knows. Intimate partner violence includes physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse and controlling behaviour.

Violence begins early. More than 1 in 5 ever-partnered girls aged 15–19 have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner.

Women with disabilities face heightened risks of violence, including violence from intimate partners and people responsible for their care.

In 2023, approximately 140 women and girls were killed every day by an intimate partner or another family member globally — approximately 51,000 deaths over the year.

Violence is significantly underreported. WHO notes that stigma and difficulties in measuring violence mean the actual prevalence is likely higher than reported estimates.

Why We Observe

OBSERVE exists to look at what the world would rather look away from. These numbers are not abstract — they are women and girls in every country, every community, every walk of life. Awareness is the first step. Action is the next.

If you or someone you know is affected by gender-based violence, please reach out to a local support service or helpline. You are not alone.
